The Interview' as Comedy Exposes the Evil of the North Korean Regime

'The Interview' as Comedy Exposes the Evil of the North Korean Regime

North Korea betrays its deepest fears with its insensate, racist attack on President Obama for having persuaded Sony to release the film "The Interview" on Christmas Day.

Who would believe that any regime would officially describe the leader of a country, any country, however hostile or hated, as "monkey in a tropical rain forest."

The language of the North Korean commentary on the film shows that it touches the deepest, rawest nerves of a system that's fearful of its ability to survive against seething but unreported dissent at home and scathing criticism from abroad, including attacks from its only real ally, China.

"The Interview" is a wildly improbable tale, pure fiction, with a great deal of vulgar language and joking that will repel many viewers.

Despite all the nonsense, though, the film conveys a message that has to be deeply upsetting to a regime that treats the Kim dynasty as a holy trinity of founder and "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung;" his son, Kim Jong-il, "Eternal Chairman" of the National Defense Commission and "Eternal Secretary" of the Workers' Party; and grandson Kim Jong-un, first chairman of the defense commission and first secretary of the party.

The film strips away the sense of divinity surrounding the leadership, portraying Kim Jong-un, as played by Randall Park, as a smooth-talking, ferocious dictator and North Korean society as deeply divided and troubled.

This image shines clearly through a plot that's first and foremost a comedy, full of crazy jokes and laughs but ultimately a tale with a sharp point that strikes at the heart of all that' wrong with North Korea.

It's easy to see why North Korean operatives and sympathizers engaged in severe, sensational threats to persuade Sony to cancel the film's release.

And it's also easy to understand the insensate wrath of North Korean leaders when Sony finally released the film on Christmas Day under strong pressure not only from Obama but also from political and entertainment figures.

Among the latter was George Clooney, who organized a petition to bring the film into independent theaters after major chains refused to show it.

The story line of the film is so silly on one level that viewers might not be aware that it also contains essential truths that could undermine the North Korean regime.

Who would believe a tale in which a television producer and talk how celebrity host decide to interview Kim Jong-un and then agree to go along with a CIA plot to assassinate him? And who would possibly see the details of the plot as anything other than Hollywood-style foolishness?

Franco, as Skylark, the celebrity interviewer, falls for the charms of Kim Jong-un just as many visitors to Pyongyang fall for whatever their guides and minders tell them. He is beguiled by Kim on the basketball court while Rogen, as the producer, enjoys Kim's company on a fun evening with beautiful women.

They can hardly imagine killing this most hospitable host until Skylark makes an important discovery. The fruit on display in a grocery store, evidence that North Koreans are well fed and happy, is made of plaster.

It is during the interview itself that Skylark tears apart the myth of Kim Jong-un, asking him pointed questions that unnerve him and the North Koreans who are monitoring the whole performance.

The interview breaks up in scenes of pandemonium and, finally, the discovery of a base bristling with missiles. As Kim hovers above in a helicopter, one of the missiles blasts him out of the air while producer and celebrity interviewer make their great escape.

The story has a love interest too in the form of a stern female North Korean officer who falls for the producer, makes passionate love with him and tells him she really plans to take over the regime.

Here is a call for revolution and civil strife that most frightens North Korean leaders. The danger of revolt from within, of a high-level coup d"etat, is evident in the purges conducted by Kim Jong-un since the execution of Jang Song-thaek and his aides more than one year ago.

The point that comes through is that somehow the film presents essential, disturbing truths about the regime. There could be no more dramatic way of conveying what North Korea is really like to a mass audience.

The question now is whether the movie will be shown worldwide, not just in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, and whether South Koreans will find it in movie theaters. Certainly one could appreciate the reluctance to show it in the South considering the possible adverse impact on all attempts at getting along with North Korea.

North Korea's response, however, was not a concern that Obama wanted American entertainment people to worry about. No way should any foreign power be able to frighten Americans into abandoning freedom of speech.

The showing of "The Interview" exemplifies the democratic spirit even if the film itself is offensively vulgar and, in places, obscene in choice of language.

The truths that "The Interview" presents about North Korea are valid. Thank God President Obama took a firm stand on the need to show it regardless of threats and intimidation.
